Black eyes and braces

There's never a dull moment in our family! Black eyes and braces... It would be funny if it was the "B" named boys who had these 2 things, but it's only one of them.

My birthday baby has a black eye :-( Poor little Mason! He fell twice within 2 days and hit almost the same spot both times. The first time the back eye wasn't too bad. I had to cancel his 1st birthday pictures, and I figured he'd be fine within a few days. Then he fell 2 days later, and it instantly swelled up again! By the afternoon it looked awful! It's been nearly 2 weeks and he still has a bit of a shiner. We've started calling him Bruiser, and unfortunately for him, I think the nickname is going to stick, for a long time. You can sort of see it in the picture. I just couldn't bear to take a picture of the black eye at it's worst.

Our other excitement...braces... Our orthodontist has been watching Blake's teeth for several years. Kids with clefts often have major teeth issues and need many many (did I say many yet?) years of braces. Just about 2 months ago our favorite orthodontist retired :-( He's the guy who did my braces, all my sisters braces and Bryce's expander. I was, and still am, so sad. But it was a blessing in disguise. I had planned to use the orthodontist who bought the practice, but on the recommendation of the cleft team went with the head of orthodontics for the cleft team, Dr. Robert Jacob. This is phase 1 of 3 phases of braces Blake will have to have, spanning about the next 10 years of his life (poor guy!) He will have some time not wearing braces, but more time wearing them, coupled with a few more surgeries. So for now, he has bands on 4 molars, and braces on his 2 front teeth. They will be moving his 2 front teeth together, and at the same time pulling his molars backwards. Next week he will get a lower holding arch to make his bottom front jaw and teeth round out a bit. In 6 months to 1 year he will get an upper palatal expander. We are praying that his 2 front teeth will move without any trouble (those are the two that he badly damaged last year), and that the sideways tooth that is appears like it will grow out the side of his gum, will move down nicely.

Blake always has such a good attitude, even thru all the medical junk he has to deal with.

But he wouldn't smile at me afterward. This was a good as it got.

24 hours later, he was fine, and I got a big cheezy grin!
